Sure, Miami’s streets will never lack statuesque model-y types teetering on stilettos and donning the latest couture fashions. And yeah, you’re likely to spy a man in a thong riding a bike along a major causeway at some point while living or visiting Magic City.
But neither fashion-forward (or backward) scenario means Miami lacks funktastic, indie style. Make nice with the handle-bar mustachioed and cat’s eye glasses-wearing set in Wynwood, hands-down the city’s hippest neighborhood.
Over the last decade, Wynwood has morphed from gritty, industrial zone to artist-friendly enclave with cutting edge street art. As the neighborhood grew to attract creative types, shopping options sprouted up fast as a thong-wearing bicyclist could pedal.
Today, you’ll find the requisite art galleries lining the sidewalks, and you’ll also find a smattering of clothing boutiques, trendy hair salons (with old-school video games, you guys!), an artisan stationary shop, juice bars, and no shortage of trendy eats, including the meatastic Butcher Shop, and cooler-than-thou Coyo Taco (ask about the speakeasy).
Wynwood’s shopping haunts can be easily explored in an afternoon or evening. If you’re not turned off by swarming crowds, the monthly art walk held on second Saturdays is a prime time to explore the ‘hood.
